Coastal Commission December meeting: Hyatt Regency-Embarcadero 5 Embarcadero Center, San Francisco, CA 94111, week of Dec. 10.

Some names just seem to crop up when bad things happen.

John Laing Homes,

and the assault on Treesitter Quigley and the Old Glory Oak, is just one of the seemingly arrogant, careless, or negligent activities that some perhaps over-zealous project managers get involved with.

The debacle on the Hellman Mesa, where construction of 70 houses on top of an Indian Burial Mound sacred to our local Gabrieleno/Tongva has been STOPPED and is in limbo due to the following enforcement action:

HELLMAN MESA: Tue. Dec. 10. John Laing Homes violated Special Condition 19.F.1, as determined by Staff. JLH bulldozed 22 ancestor graves on 3 of the sacred sites on Hellman Mesa, including ORA-264. They still refuse to follow Condition 19.F.1, instead, are in denial.
Staff-generated Cease and Desist can only last 90 days; in order to continue it, the full Commission must back staff and extend the Order to force John Laing to comply with the Permit.
POSSIBLE RESOLUTION: http://SealBeach.org/map.htm idea has been created by some Native Americans, would let the ancestors lie where they were found -- mostly on ORA-264, so far -- and create a small, respectful cemetery with native plant garden and ceremonial access. This would require relocation of 7 houses, and cooperation of JLH, Commission, and Native Americans.

People are needed who can attend (carpool too), and speak for staff report and for a new, respectful approach to ancient burials and our *survivors*, the Gabrieleno/Tongva, our local First Nation.

RE: OPPOSE DOS PUEBLOS COASTAL PERMIT
Dec. ___, 2002

Dear Commissioner Hart:
Please support staff recommendation to deny the Dos Pueblos Golf Course on Dec. 11 (Agenda Item 22).

A Golf Course requires huge amounts of herbicide, pesticide and fertilizer to support the unnatural mono-culture grass favored by our courses. These chemicals are unavoidable, and inevitably make an impact on the surrounding habitat.

Instead of a habitat, we are left with at most a duck pond -- often with coots and ducks being shot or harrassed.

There so far has never been a public accounting of the extent of chemical use by Golf Courses.

Sincerely,
