News

If you haven't checked it out recently, our chapter website has a brand new look. It is still under construction but has a lot of great information already and is a great resource for ocean/water enthusiasts. The website will be our up to date place for information on all our key issues, events and news. Check it out at: www.surfrider.org/huntington/

Calendar of Events

Orange County Activists Network Training, May 15th (6-9pm):

There will be a training session for all who would like to become a part of this excellent network.

This network will be providing oversight of local government actions that may be under the ultimate authority of the Coastal Commission. This will primarily cover local governments whose boundaries include areas in the "coastal zone". The CAN project will include volunteers to act as go betweens with Commission staff, as well as volunteers to communicate with an educate Coastal commissioners themselves. Finally, when we have issues that are being decided in Coastal Commission hearings in distant parts of the state, we will be able to turn to the network for support.

For more information contact Gary Sargent at gary.b.sargent@boeing.com

RWQCB Meeting, May 16th:

Held in the Santa Ana City Council chambers.

Coastal Snapshot Day, May 17th:

Volunteer for this statewide event. Monitors all along the coast will collect fresh water samples from as many streams and waterways as possible. The focus is to be on coastal waterways that drain directly into the ocean. The sites will also be photo documented and field data sheets will be filled out for each site.

For more information on volunteering, please contact Ray Hiemestra, Orange County Coastal Coordinator for the Cpastal Snapshot Day Project at cart0man@prodigy.net

Surfrider Educational Workshop, May 18th:

Are you interested in volunteering for our Respect The Beach education program? Our Chapter will be doing a big educational outreach program this fall. You must get trained this summer in order to participate. This is a national workshop and space is limited. There will four separate presentations by different Southern California Chapter programs. Please contact Sarah Carlson, Membership & Volunteer Director at happyblackbird@yahoo.com to get on the attending list. If you can't make this workshop but want to sign on to the program send an e-mail. The more people we have interested the more chapter training programs we can schedule throughout the summer months.

Huntington Beach Clean Up, May 31st:

This is our monthly beach clean up. We hope to beat our attendance of 50 from last month! Clean up runs from 8am to Noon at Huntington State Beach. Enter the State parking lot at either Brookhurst or Magnolia. We will be at the last lot to the South. Look for our Beach Cleanup Sign! School credit is offered if needed.

General Chapter Meeting, June 1st:

This general meeting will be our "Membership Drive KICK-OFF Party". Starting at 7pm at the new Bolsa Chica State Beach Visitors Center. The event is free for everyone so bring friends and family. If you have a new member sign up that night you recieve a FREE chapter t-shirt!

We came in 5th last summer and want to take 1st this year! We will have a thermometer on our website keeping track of our standing. And if you are signed up for our volunteer program, you gain points for every new member application you turn in. The more points you have the more chances you have to win great prizes this winter.

And if all that isn't incentive enough, our chapter recieves a portion of every new membership. This is a great and easy fundraiser for every member to be a part of! So come on down to the General meeting, collect your membership applications and enjoy the food.

Chapter Executive Meeting, June 12th:

You don't have to be an executive or committee director to take part in this meeting. All our welcome. Meeting starts at 7pm at the Bolsa Chica State Beach Visitors Center.

Thanks to you all for all of your support and hope to see you at one of our events soon!

Cheers and aloha!
