Hi,

Attacks on the Trabuco Oak Canopy are just a part of the overall attack on Heritage Trees. You may remember the efforts of O.C. Democrat Committemember Joey Racano to get the "Heritage Tree [protection] Resolution" through the Cal. STATEWIDE Democrat Convention. Thanks to Joey's efforts, this resolution was PASSED AND ADOPTED, putting statewide pressure on top of the fickle, waffling and mostly worthless O.C. Board of Supes, who seem to approve any development no matter the cost to our quality of life.

This generalization of the issue is important. It's not JUST John Quigley's "Old Glory" Oak, it's not JUST Julia's "Luna", it's not even JUST the beautiful Oaks gracing canyon life in Trabuco. All the Heritage Trees must be preserved, as one old conservative fiscal guru stated, "...you can't replace an 1800 year old tree...they should be approached with reverence...".

Prudence demands that we not squander the heritage resources of the millenia for our own generation's excess. A good first step is SB754, Heritage Tree Preservation Act:

"...prohibit (1) cutting or causing a substantial probability of significant harm to any heritage tree... (2) using a...buffer zone...that significantly harms a heritage tree, and (3) cutting a heritage tree..." "...'Heritage tree' means any old-growth tree on forestland...[with] minimum diameter at stump height is...
"(A) Coast redwood: 42 inches.
(B) Douglas fir: 40 inches.
(C) Giant sequoia or sierra redwood: 50 inches.
(D) Hardwoods: 28 inches..."

ISSUE: FULL SENATE TO VOTE ON SB 754: The Heritage Tree Preservation Act

WHEN: The Vote will be held on the floor of the California State Senate during the week of June 2 (possibly as early as June 3)

This is your chance to protect this planet, the environment and to preserve these natural giants for future generations--please take 2 minutes to make a difference.

The Heritage Tree Preservation Act (SB 754), as introduced by Senator Perata, will ban the cutting of selected species of old-growth trees (Coast Redwoods, Giant Sequoia, Port Orford Cedars, Douglas-firs and hardwoods) in California on non-federal forestlands that were alive in 1850, California's first year of statehood. SB 754 applies protections to the remaining oldest and largest trees, which represent less than one-half of one percent of the non-federally owned trees standing in California today. For more information on the bill, please go to:

http://www.ancienttrees.org

The bill has passed the Committee on Natural Resources and Wildlife, as well as the Senate Appropriations Committee and now faces a vote by the full Senate this week.

Time is of the essence. Please take action now!

ACTION: Contact your State Senator and as many of the Senators below as you can and encourage them to vote :

YES on SB 754

Senator Wesley Chesboro (916) 445-3375
Senator Mike Machado (916) 445-2407
Senator Dean Florez (916) 445-4641
Senator Bruce McPherson (916) 445-5843
Senator Denise Ducheny (916) 445-6767

California has already lost 97% to 99% of its ancient trees, some of which lived on our planet for nearly 2000 years. Let your Senator know that we cannot afford to destroy the few old-growth trees we have left so that the timber industry can continue to maximize profits at the expense of our environment, health, history, and quality of life...

The following Senators have already voted for this bill. Please tell them "Thank You" for their past support and ask them to please encourage other Senators to vote for SB 754.
