Hi,

What are fuel cells worth? What is the viability of the dream of fuel cells, that led Gov. Davis and his "Air Resources Board" to cancel the ZEV mandate, and kill Electric Cars?

Fuel Cells are not Anathema to the Oilies, since Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCV) still require loading up at the GAS PUMP.

Just a different kind of gas, one that costs a lot more, maybe $1 per MILE. No one knows if the cost of that Hydrogen could be lowered to 70, or 50 cents per mile. It's a dream to get to 30 cents! Can you imagine spending $300 to fill up the (Hydrogen) gas tank, and it would only take you 600 miles? All this is assuming the cost of the fuel cell vehicle could be reduced from the current $1.2m to as low as $300k.

So the Oil Lobby -- what is called familiarly "The Oilies" -- can tolerate the myth of Fuel Cell Vehicles as they barely tolerate the existence of Natural Gas Vehicles. So

long as it's not impeding the flow of money in their cash cow business, and calling into question the detritus of the Oilies -- from Urban Runoff to domestic and foreign dictators.

But Electric Vehicles are feared and hated by the Oilies. EV drivers sail right past gas pumps. The invisible chain holding your neck to the gasoline pump -- and Oilie profits -- is broken when you drive an EV. Oilies say all kinds of things to slander EVs: "lookat upstream pollution", for example. Well, let's look at it. Upstream of an EV is rooftop solar power, which provides AMPLE juice to run two or more EVs. Upstream of the Gasoline pump is... air pollution, refinery spewing deadly gas onto our kids, oil spills killing sea otters, overseas oil dictators, the facade of Saudi Arabia, 1100 tons of depleted Uranium radioactive dust poisoning Iraqi children...But the Oilies say all kinds of things. Like "EVs could explode". Like "EVs are too expensive". The truth is, EVs are a threat to the gasoline economy and Oilie profit, that's all.

Hydrogen for Fuel Cell Vehicles, if, against all odds the myth became reality, would would require compact, reliable sources of power -- such as nuclear power plants. One installation in the desert has a 180kw solar array making the Hydrogen to power just four (4) FCV, whereas a household rooftop system as small as 12kw could easily power 4 Battery Electric Vehicles.

So far, the "fallout" (oh, sorry, wrong term) from Fuel Cell Vehicles has led to the US Government funding the first 6 (six) of an estimated 600 new-tech nukes. These are SAFE, so don't worry. They finally figured out how to make them fail-safe: although some would say, the only way for a nuke to be safe, is if they FAIL to be built!

Now, however, in their time of triumph, Chevron, operating as "Chevron-Texaco", need no longer dissemble. They are now free to dump the scams, since they killed the ZEV mandate and EVs.

In particular, they can dump the stupid Fuel Cell Division that came with the batteries when it bought up the patents on NiMH. Yes, that's right, Chevron BOUGHT UP and is now administering the patents on the advanced batteries used in running EVs. A lesson to be learned, for anyone that tries to make EVs or seriously challenge the Oilies. Otherwise, why would they buy up that battery, and sue Panasonic for trying to sell them to EV makers? Yes, if you use the NiMH battery for so-called Hybrids, they will allow it; but if you try to make a full-function EV, one that goes 80 mph and travels over 100 miles on a charge, they will suppress it.

Now, they can settle in to the pleasant task of raking in the loot, cranking out the oil, pumping up the black gold, and fouling the air, the Ocean, and the land. Standard Oilie Practice!

Let's hear it, folks, sing the Oilie Mantra, lacking all pretense of harmony:

"Hybrids now (pump pump), wait for Fuel Cells (heh heh)".
"EVs failed (ho ho), no one wants them...DEMAND IS LOW...
"Don't wanna plug in (no no)...PUMP Gas IN and go go go...
"Don't wanna wait...TO REFUEL (might burst into flames...
"Overnite charging is much too slow...
"Gasoline, gasoline, love that smell...
"Might go to Canarsie, just wanna be free...
"Hybrids now, Hummers later..."

[Ooops, strike that last verse]
